Still hot for handmade? We have you covered with ideas to scratch that crafty itch and bring a little of that artisanal spirit into your home:
- Start some sourdough. Even if you didn’t jump on the sourdough wagon in 2020, there’s no reason not to give it a try now. With a little flour and a little patience, you can have a beautiful starter for bread, crepes and more. Bonus: it’s a fun tradition to name your starter. (We’d call ours Fro-dough Baggins.)
- Practice painting. Whether you’re a solo artist or you have little ones who love to play with color, painting is a fun way to unleash your creativity and create something pretty. Watercolors are a beginner-friendly and affordable medium for painting beautiful landscapes.
- Say yes to yarn. With the turn of the season right around the corner, now’s the perfect time to start a cozy project. A scarf makes a great first project. Or, if you don’t want to fuss with needles (or hooks), try arm knitting a soft, bulky blanket that’ll keep you warm in the cooler weather.
- Brew up some bath bombs. You can create fizzy bath bombs with easy-to-get ingredients. The fun part? Choosing your own scent: we like citrus for summer, woods for winter and florals for spring. Just make sure the oils you’re using are of high quality, and always test for allergies first.
- DIY some decor. We love the environment, and upcycling is a wonderful way to transform something you might not use into something you’ll love. Revamp an old dresser with some paint and creativity, transform ragged t-shirts into a cute bath mat or repurpose an old pallet into designer doggie digs.
- Hydrate with homebrew. Brewing your own beer gets a rep for being challenging—and it can be!—but there are plenty of easy recipes with tasty rewards. Try this chai-barley tea brew or this mango black tea short mead. Booze not your thing? Opt for beneficial brews like beet kvass or kombucha.

Even though fall (and winter) creep closer and closer, summer isn’t over quite yet. The Farmer’s Almanac predicts a fierce winter this year, but until then, we’ll be slathering on sunscreen, crafting our hearts out and enjoying as much of the warm weather as we can.
